I was diagnosed with gallstones 5 weeks ago and am waiting to have my gall bladder removed - has anyone here been throught this procedure - how long did it take to recuperate etc??
Answer:
I had my gallbladder removed by keyhole surgery in July 2008. I went in as a day patient. on Friday. Had the op at 09.30 and went home that night at 6 pm. I was prescribed just painkillers. No antibiotics. Was a bit stiff for a few days but not in any pain. I took it easy for a few days and was able to go shopping by the following Wednesday.
I was expecting to injured or feel something, but I can honestly state there was no pain, just minor anguish. The only thing was that you feel very exhausted for the first week afterwards and you can suffer with abdominal bloating and wind. You are advised to walk as much as possible afterwards to get your circulation going and to stimulate healing. Not all patients suffer the same symptoms or side effects. You’ll be given plenty of advice and relevant patient care leaflets. Depending on the job you do, you can normally return to work after one week
For me, It was less traumatic than having a tooth filled. Have felt well ever since and not needed a special diet. Dont miss my gallbladder at all. It is a very common and straight forward procedure.
Good luck. Hope it goes well and is as easy and pain free as mine was.

I had my gallbladder out last December. I went in at lunchtime, to a day unit. I had to put on a gown and paper knickers, and some surgical stockings, plus my OWN slippers and dressing gown. Then I had blood tests, urine test and a chat with the surgeon and anaesthetist. I had my pre-med, and sat in a very cosy lounge area, with other day patients, until I was called in for the operation.
I walked into the theatre, got on the operating table, had an Oxygen mask put over my face, and woke up 2 hours later, still on the table. They took me to a recovery bed, where I had a cup of tea and some toast, and I went home after 3 hours.
For the first 48 hours, I had painkillers, and I was told not to lift anything (not so much as a kettle), so someone needs to look after you for a while. I had 3 small incision wounds, which healed after about a week or so. (dissolvable sutures) I wasn’t granted to drive for 3 weeks.
It took about a month before I could tolerate any fat in my diet, but since then, I've felt great.

My hubby had his gallbladder out about 3 years ago. He underwent key-hole surgery and stayed in overnight. He came out the following day with no problems, I think he’d to have a course of antibiotics and he had the usual checkups afterwards. He popped into work the day he got out for a quick visit and was back behind his desk after 4 days. The only thing he suffers from now, that he didn't then, is an allergy to codeine. Hope it all goes well and don't worry, it will be fine.
