I was finkin of startin to meditate for 15 mins everyday, but i was wonderin weva it is okay to put some nice soothing music on youtube to start me off

Answer:
Fifteen minutes daily is great, and music is helpful to a lot of people. What's important is that you’re experimenting with ways that lead to inner peace, thus outer calm. I've tried a variety of different methods through the years, including music.

I found the most long-term benefit in silence. Meditation is about training one's mind. Personal experience taught me that music was another distraction used by my mind to avoid the deep silence of my soul. Then, I found a compromise and beautiful method. It's called Passage Meditation.

The man who developed Passage Meditation is from India. He came to America and was the first person to instruct an accredited meditation class at U.C. Berkeley in California. The Blue Mountain Center for Meditation's website is at http://easwaran.org/. Thirty minutes first thing in the morning is suggested in the beginning. The website explains the method and offers on the web passages to use, if one doesn't have the book. The very first one I used was the Prayer of St. Francis, which I liked a lot because I like animals.

If you take a look at the website, let me know what you think. I started this method when I was 21, more than twice that many years ago. It's the best I've found.

May your soul find rest in a quiet mind.

Answer:
It all depends what you want to meditate for. Silent meditation in the lotus position is not really the thing for us in the western world until we’ve developed what it takes. We should begin with something else and ease into this.

Or you could join a meditation group. That's usually effective. You benefit from the group energy and you learn more swiftly to be able to manage at home afterwards.

There are some CD's on active meditation which are ideal suited to westerners.

And of course, there’s the meditation you do when doing anything when you are alone: working in the garden, doing the washing up, housework, hanging the washing, whatever! Better not meditate when driving, though!

Best of luck!

Answer:
You can listen to music or chanting monks, or you can listen to silence. Meditation is something each person must learn on their own. There’s no one set way to do it, because the same method does not work for everyone. We’re all different. The point of meditation, by my understanding, is to free the mind from thought. I seek silence in my mind. Sometimes music can help with this, but sometimes it interferes. It's ultimately up to the person meditating to decide what helps them find that peace inside. :)

Answer:
Some people like visualisation to meditation because they want something that can help to lead them into a meditative state. Relaxation CDs can help with this.
