Why should Osteopaths use the title Doctor? We aren't doctors or pretending to be. WE ARE OSTEOPATHS.

You can look at in a few ways.
1) KO & co want to slander you in any way possible, including attacking your profession since you seem to care about it. Not being a "doctor" is a basis to form an attack on, hence it's used. Some of the classic rules for propoganda include;
a)Appeal to emotions, not logic
b) Repeat it until people believe it or it becomes a part of the public debate.
Going after you like this frames the debate around a minor point…..whether or not you have a title, instead of something important like say….that UK osteopathy actually works.
2) We live in a credentialed society, where the title you have is all that matters. In a way you could analogize being degreeless now to being black in the states 50 years ago. A society bias is created to view you as being "worthless." As a result, people often go on and on about specific credentials someone has, and how that dictates their value. I personally think the viewpoint is a little silly (since I know a lot of idiots with graduate degrees, and very smart competent people who never finished high school), but it becomes absurd when you take it to the level KO did there. Everything you did is worthless (as are you) because you do not have the exact title and designation held in another country to evaluate quality. The reason KO gave for not being a doctor is a lie, but given the nature of what he's saying it's fine to use.
No matter what you do, KO will never say your profession works. He doesn't have any real ground to go on, so he's making a lot of unstubstanciated flames and generalizations. If you look at it, he hasn't even pulled the "chiropractors kill people with spinal adjustment" card on you. There really is not that much to go after osteopthy for. Osteopaths in the UK don't use chemicals or surgery on their patients, and they get decent results. There aren't any specifics to go after you on, so you should take them making such a big deal about this as a good sign. It simply means he has nothing else on your profession.

People have been trained for around 100 years to go with new medicines. And for the most part they have worked wonderfully. Certainly the mainstream medical industry will reinforce this at every opportunity. That being said, I believe there is still a place for alternatives.

It's just that they don't (usually) have a particular Degree that entitles them to use that title. It's interesting that doctors strive for years to attain that title, then surgeons strive for even more years to be entitled to call themselves Mr, Mrs, or Miss!

Actually, I have come to look at the term "doctor" with scorn and distaste from years of experience with their inability to effect a cure for just about anything. While doctors merely practice their trade on innocent humans and get away with it, the rest of us professionals are expected to know what we're doing and are held accountable for our results. This opinion is based on my experience proving that medical doctors aren't what people seem to believe they are.
Now then, why do you care what K.O. (or any other naysayer) says about anything? Do you really believe anyone pays any attention to him? He's a pompous blowhard that seems to enjoy stirring stuff up. Look at the thumbs up to thumbs down ratio he usually gets.
This whole thing is a tempest in a teakettle. People are going to believe what they want to believe. Hopefully, enough of them are like me and when they become disappointed with the mainstream medical community's ineptitude, they will have the presence of mind to see that there are alternatives that are vastly superior in assisting the body to do what it does best… thrive.
Since I abandoned mainstream medicine's typical throw a drug at the problem mentality, I have conquered depression, said goodbye to diabetes medication, and have all but eliminated the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Not one doctor was able to help me in any of this. All they want to do it prescribe medication that cures nothing.
It's unfortunate that the truth remains covered up by the likes of K.O., but unless or until someone or something breaks the cabal of big pharma or mainstream medicine (AMA), society is doomed to suffer and hospitals will continue to flourish.

The logic of the poster (poser) that you are talking about always uses the faulty logic of "If A, then B has to be true" without any supporting evidence at all other than common misconceptions.
This is also the way the biased anti-alternative medicine site he always quotes operates.
There is little if any evidence, and when there is it is partially presented, misrepresented whenever possible, and often filled with complete lies.
European Osteopaths are highly trained. I think the public is well aware what sphere they operate in, and there is no misrepresentation at all going on of what services they can and cannot provide.
The Doctor title or absense thereof is just a detail, and essentially a results of cultural differences more than qualification.

I'm a medical herbalist and i also have a higher degree. It's illegal for me to call myself a doctor and a legal requirement to correct anyone who does so. I have substantially the same training as a doctor, and then there are my other degrees. I don't actually care about it and i think people who do use their titles are often pretentious. As far as i'm concerned, learning is worthwhile for its own sake and in any case no substitute for experience. There are lots of other people whose skills and learning aren't as valued by society but just as important,. A case in point is anyone who works in sewage. The maintenance of good sanitation has saved millions or billions of people's lives, and us CAM people and doctors taken together pale into insignificance compared to the value of people who work in the sewers, but they basically get no respect at all. I think that puts this issue into some perspective, and a little humility and respect would be in order.

Good post, thank you! I am just an average person, but based on my experience over the last few years, I am glad osteopaths aren't calling themselves doctors, because I probably would have missed one of the most helpful experiences of my life. An osteopath was able to help my baby who was screaming constantly, after I lost complete faith in the medical profession. All those people that call themselves doctors just sent me home saying she was medically fine. So appreciation for all osteopaths is something that I recently gained, and people should not comment on things they know nothing about. Why bad mouth osteopathy just because they are not called doctors, it just doesn't make sense to me

I would go with Mr.Peachy's answer above, I mean in the conventional manner of speaking whats a "DOCTOR" a term used for a licensed drug pusher who force unnatural chemicals down our throat and have the audacity of telling us its "MEDICINE" isn't medicine something which should make you feel better when you are sick and improve the quality of your life mentally and physically and are what these "REAL DOCTOR" doing anything about it. I know doctors as people who all but killed me in trying to treat what was Typhoid 20 some years ago and when I came out of the hospital, I was not able to stand on my feet, could'nt eat anything without throwing it up wthin seconds, couldnt think clearly I was about 10 shaeds darker then before I started taking "MEDICINE" by smirk smirk "Real Doctors" its Homeopathy which saved my life and brought me back to a healthy human being. I agree. Why would anybody want to be called a doctor anyway? In my experience, most of them are pretty useless and some are downright dangerous!
People shouldn't be so prejudiced against alternative therapies.
