Answer:
A dentist spends his/her day listening to the complaints of their patients. My tooth hurts, I hate the drill, I hate the needle, I hate the smell, I hate the taste, I hate the light, I HATE THE DENTIST!!!
Most dentists deal with all the negativity quite well. Not everybody is the same. Not everybody can deal with the negativity and the problems as well as others can, and they can begin sinking into a depression.
The problem with dentistry, unlike medicine, is that you have few options to make a change in your career if you need or want to. Medical doctors can always make a lateral shift, change from what they are doing to doing something else. Dentists are only able to do wet fingered dentistry. That’s, if you’re a dentist, you’re pretty much limited to being stuck inside people's mouths all day long. Sure you can send out root canals if you don't like them, or send out your extractions, but then you might find yourself not as busy as you need to be.
Which brings up another point. Dentists have the highest overhead of any health care practitioner. Dental offices are extremely high-priced to run, with most overheads being between 60-80 cents on the dollar. That mean when you pay a dentist $100, 60-80 dollars goes back into the running of the practice. The rent, the staff, the equipment, the materials. They’re all very pricey. And when a patient doesn't show up for their appointment (which MANY MANY don't), the dentist sits around not making any money for that time, but the bills still need to be paid. Or the dentist overbooks the schedule so those last minute cancellations or no shows don't hurt so much, but then he’s running around like a madman to get everything done.
Maybe you get the picture….maybe you don't. Being a dentist is very stressful. The work environment can be very negative. Most people don't seem to appreciate what you do for them, but instead look at you like you’re the devil trying to pry their money away from their wallets, and to inflict as much pain as possible upon them. Dentists need to derive their own pleasure from the job. Most see that pleasure in the form of their paycheque at the end of the month. Even more get it from a job they know was well done, but very few other people including the patient will know it.
