Trust me, you don’t want to not have a local anesthetic before dental treatment.
As a Dental Assistant I would never let them work on my teeth without it. My comfort is the number one reason for this, but there are others.
If the dentist is drilling out decay on your tooth and hits a very sensitive spot and you were to jump or move your arms, you run the danger of having the dentist loosing his/her grip on the hand-piece,( “drill” ) and the bur slicing your tongue, cheek or lip. The burs that we use are very sharp. You don’t want this to happen.
So have the anesthetic, you’ll feel superior.

I can't stand needles so I usually just tell them to get on with it. I try and concentrate on something else (remembering childbirth usually does the trick - nothing can be THAT painful!) or wear my ipod.
