No they actually don't whilst they do help to excersie muscles the amount of actual work done is so minimal it results in no change. If you want to improve abs change your eating and exercise habits so you burn more calories than you eat in a day. Remember you need a lot to sit around at my height and weight I need about 1800 calories a day so if I want to loose weight I simply eat only 1400 and exercise (not precise).
In any case your abs will come through once you loose the layers of fat on top no matter what size they are.
