I recently booked a package holiday that required that I use their airline. Not really a problem.
My luggage allowance as you are aware on these airlines is normally 20/25kilo.
I keep within my luggage allowance which means that I do not have to pay an excess charges normally £5/kilo.
Not a big deal, until I turnround to leave for departures. I see that the family behind me is morbidly obese, not one member of the family, all four adults, at least twice my weight. These peolpe have the same luggage allowance as I do but weigh twice as much as I do but will not have to pay extra (assuming luggage allowance is not exceeded).
Should we should go back to the early days of flying when you had to get on the scales along with your luggage.
Answer:
the whole point of paying excess luggage is because the plane has to carry more fuel. so my question would be do the check in staff have to alert the piolt if they have morbidly obese people check in as surley they weigh more then some ones bag who has a few too many shoes packed ? but i dont think it would be right to charge them as its a human rights issue but what i would say is that if the population becomes more obese then the airlines will properly put up the cost of tickets as a whole
Answer:
have you seen how long check in takes in heathrow? why on earth would you want to make it even longer???
should 7ft basketball players pay twice as much as 3.5 ft dwarfs as well?
Answer:
Lesson for you. Muscle weighs more than fat. Fat people often weigh less than their muscular friends. x
Answer:
Absolutely!!
Answer:
bet they were from florida!
Answer:
Riiiiight… and let's make sure that 200-pound men pay four times as much as 50-pound children, and twice as much as 100-pound teenage girls. How much do you weigh, now???
Why don't you just admit that you don't like fat people? I'll bet THEY don't like bigots, either.
Answer:
It actually helps the aircraft, they go to the back on take off and go to the front on landing. It makes it easier to take off and land, LOL>
Answer:
Sounds fair to me. I hate sitting beside fat people - they spill over onto your seat. Tall people don't. They're just a nuisance at a concert.
Answer:
Absolutely not.
The airlines do not charge less for children over two years who sit on their parents knees during flight and they weigh next to nothing. This would be considered as discrimination. The airlines would open themselves to litigation if this were the case.
Many people who suffer from obesity do not do so by choice.
Answer:
Well some morbidly obese people are now being turned away from flying in economy because they cannot fit in the seats. Also they are made to go business class on some airlines because the seats are bigger.(They have pay more ofcourse). I would imagine that some morbidly obese people probably book two seats(if the can afford it) so they can fit comfortably onto plane. As far as the weight is concerned, I tend to agree with you that their weight must contribute to the overall weight going aboard the aircraft. Maybe we should go back to weighing people as well as the luggage. Never thought of that one. I do not intend to be prejudiced against obese people in any of my comments. I am just giving my opinion.
Answer:
Yes, if they take up more than one seat.
Answer:
Its not the people who are too large, its just the seats that are too small! Wouldn't it be a better idea to insist that the airlines decrease their profits and increase the size of all their seats. That way we can all enjoy a comfortable flight.
Answer:
No true, my sister-inlaw is obese, she has to pay for 2 seats,
Answer:
Heh heh - I wish that was the case!!! I weigh 50 kilograms so it would be a cheap trip for me, lol!
:o)
Answer:
In the case of passenger weight it is looked upon as an average. Each seat has a weight allocated to it. Some have over the weight and some have under the weight. The only real control is on the baggage so this is the most equitable way. Those that fly and are over weight do have a terrible job fitting in the seats as they are quite narrow. I am 6ft 4in and have a 34 inch inside leg measurement. When I fly as I did on a holiday recently I have to pay for extra legroom so for two of us I pay £80 extra for the return flight.
Answer:
.
when i travelled years ago in the business i dealt in there were times we were weighed before boarding the aircraft
especially in hotter climates
to answer the question, yes i believe that morbidly obese passengers should paymore and it may stop them from stuffing their faces all the time
Answer:
If someone's size requires a second seat then they should pay for two seats.
The weight of a person is not necessarily linked to body fat. An Olympic shot-putter can easily weigh over 300LBS in muscle while someone short yet obese can weigh 200LBS.
I guess the ideal thing would be to be an anorexic courier and be able to take around 120 kilos of luggage as part of your body weight allowance.
Answer:
Absolutely, as long as anorexics get rebate.
Answer:
I'm conflicted. Because I want to say yes they should pay more but only and I say only if the plane is not full and they need two seats. However it should be done in a very discreet way so as not to embarass the person. A big person may lack the confidence to do anything in life. I am 30kg heavier than I should be as a side effect of a medicine that I take not cause I 'stuff' my face. Should I be charged extra for this unfortunate circumstance - hell no.
Answer:
In America, most domestic airlines do charge for "people of size". They have to buy an extra seat unless they are able to physically prove they can sit in the one seat with the armrests down comfortably. I've seen it on Airline USA. Not all who are classed as morbidly obese have to purchase a second seat.
Answer:
absolutely they should pay more. they take up more space in the airplane and cause more of a weight strain. if a person needs two seats to be able to fit on the airplane then they should pay for both seats. having absurd eating habits and lifestyles is something u can help and u should not be pardoned for it when need two seats on an airplane.
Answer:
Yes obese people that need more seating room or luggage allowence should pay more. Not people with muscle though.
The reason I think this is for insurance and passenger safety purposes as it is more likely that a obese person will fall ill while on the flight and the flight would have to be diverted etc… Where as a "normal" healthy person or muscley person will less likely take ill.
Answer:
Making overweight people paying extra when flying is just singling them out, Not only that but think of the embarrassment for that person.
Answer:
Only if they take up two seats. They should have to pay extra on buses and trains if they need more than one seat.
Answer:
Well I am heavy but carry no fat!
