It could if you inhale it, and it would be consider as Secondhand smoke, also know as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers. It is involuntarily inhaled by nonsmokers, lingers in the air hours after cigarettes have been extinguished and can cause or exacerbate a wide range of adverse health effects, including cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma.

Answer:
Ok, first of all smoking DOES NOT cause lung cancer, it simply increases your chances of getting it, you could very well get lung cancer without ever smoking a cig or being exposed to it.

Secondly, yes, if you can smell it you’re being exposed to carcinogens, it is known as “passive smoking” and has been proven to increase your risks for heart and lung disease among other things.

The danger involved depends on how much exposure your getting, things like how often he smokes and how close in proximity(like feet and inches) you are to the site of the smoking. If your room is on the opposite side of the apartment the danger is probably similar to just living in the city, but if your right next to each other then you are at risk if your going to be living together for longer periods of time

If it bothers you perhaps you could ask him to leave windows open in his room when he smokes, or if it is nice outside he can smoke outside(assuming state laws don’t prohibit this)

Answer:
It sounds like you two share an apartment, and don't live in campus housing … if that's the case, you'll probably have to get a 3rd objective person in to help you 2 come to some agreement on this smoking roomie. It's just not healthy, for either of you period. The fact that it bothers you, in any way, and is a health concern indicates you should move forward to cease his smoking on premises, now. Most smokers are very polite and smoke outdoors anyway.

However, anyone can get lung cancer from passive smoke, but there's more involved besides cancer. Depending on your own health status (and respiratory/sinus/allergy status) you may experience more URIs, bronchial infections, etc. from this intrusive irritant. It's not worth it.

At the same time, smokers are really addicted to smoking, and it takes them time to pull away from it; as much as they may want to quit. So, keep this in mind as you plan how to change your living arrangements for mutual benefit. It always pays to care for your health, first, but also to take into account others - you may not know how your roomate feels about his own habit.

In the meantime, I'd ask him if he'd buy a good air purifier, and keep his windows open a bit, or smoke outdoors. It's not at all unusual for smokers to understand others discomforts about the smoke. Once you know someone who's died from lung cancer, or has congestive heart failure, smoking is simple out!

Good luck.

Answer:
it absolutely IS second hand smoke and it's perilous! Is this in a dorm? I can't imagine they allow smoking in a dorm. If it's a situation you can get out of, I would make moving a priority! Next time, make sure you find or are paired with roomies who DON'T smoke!!!!! I feel for you- I can't tolerate smoke at all- I can smell it a mile away and I don't like it or feel like I should be subjected to it! Stand your ground! Good Luck!

Answer:
probably not, maybe if you were standing next to his open door where you were in direct contact with the smoke. The bad thing about ciggerettes smoke is that if you do it inside it will smell throughout the house only if its in that one room. Thats probably what you smell, the stench of them just doing it a lot.

Answer:
Yes this is second hand smoking. Please ask him to stop smoking in his room or you purchase yourself a good air purifier.

The cilia in the lungs get paralyzed form us smelling someone clothes who just smoked so I can’t imagine what happens to your lungs if you are smelling fresh smoke.

Answer:
yes it is 2nd hand smoking.

Answer:
yes… second hand smoke isn't when someone smokes secondly if that's what you were thinking…

it's breathing in another person's smoke.

Answer:
I gave up smoking two years ago, but I still find the whining of non-smokers incredibly irritating. Glad you arent my room mate, you sound like a moaning twat.

Answer:
It is very possible but there's not as much of a chance as if you were in the same room or smoking yourself.

Answer:
realistically, anyone can get lung cancer…

what you're going through isn't bad 2nd hand smoke, but it still is…talk to him if it bothers you

Answer:
yes - it's still amazing to me how rude smokers can be.

Why do they think all the laws were passed prohibiting smoking in public places? Maybe they think everyone should stink as bad as they do.

Answer:
You need to drink a beer and quit being so anal! I mean, you’re in college right???

Answer:
