I am literally just got back from hospital and my dad has had a stroke.
He’s breathing normally and is in and out of concisiousnes but is appartently stable. I am obviously upset as is my mum but I dont know much about strokes and I am really worried that he couldnt remember my name or my mum's. is this a normal short term thing?
Any advise would be appreciated as I have to be strong for my mum and want to be able to reassure her as ideal I have the ability to.
Many thanks

It is impossible to state at this stage, but most stroke sufferers make a pretty good recovery. My mum had a big stroke a few years ago and has been in a nursing home unable to talk or move properly ever since. She still knows who we all are. That said, hers was an extreme case. My old boss had a stroke a few years ago - same symptoms as you’ve described, and now it is like nothing ever happened to him. Strokes are difficult to predict so keep thinking positive. He may be totally OK next week. The crucial thing with a stroke is that the earlier it is treated, the better the chances of very little long term damage. When he comes out of hospital, an asparin a day will keep the blood thinner and reduce the danger of another stroke.
As for memory loss, it depends again on what part of the brain has received the stroke as different parts of the brain control different aspects of the mind and body. Just keep thinking positive and hope for the ideal. There’s nothing that you can do until you see the doctors tomorrow. I know it's tough but time is the key now. They will know a lot more in 24 hours than they do now.

Sorry to hear about your father, I hope he recovers. Many people do.
The most common stroke is the cardio-vascular accident (CVA) stroke. This is the one most people recover from. It is caused by a short starvation of oxygen to a part of the brain.
I a haemorrhage stroke, part of the brain tissue is destroyed by blood leaking on to it from a ruptured blood vessel. This is by far the most serious type of stroke.
Wait and see. If your dad has (relative) youth on his side, he might make a recovery. But remember damage caused by a stroke is not reversible.

The next 24-48 hours are critical, and all you can do is wait, and keep talking to your dad. Have the doctors done a CT scan? They’ll be able to see what proportion of the brain has been affected, and how well your dad is likely to make a good recovery. Don't give up hope at this stage.
Be strong for your father AND mum. It's hard (I've been in your position) but try to get some rest, too.
Good luck

Answer:
Strokes are very common and its possible to recover from them and to carry on with a normal life afterwards. At this time its best to be positive and to expect your dad to make a good recovery. So keep your spirits up and things will work out fine.
Answer:
Sorry to hear about your dad, but the fact that he’s stable is good, chill, just go with your emotions, thats no bad thing you know, just give your mum a hug and tell her you love her. X
Answer:
it's too early to assess the amount of damage to the brain. support each other and stay in touch with his doctors. there’s a long road of rehab ahead. be sure your parents' legal issues are in order.
