I recently found out that a friend of mine contracted HIV from an ex. They had it for a number of years before finding out. As far as I know I’ve never been at risk but would like to have a test anyway for peace of mind. Can I get this test anywhere and will it go on my medical records?

The standard protocol in almost all areas is to test ANYONE who requests an HIV test.
There can be a variety of testing methods that can affect whether a test result is recorded on your medical file. If you have ANONYMOUS HIV testing clinics, your name/healthcard isn’t taken and therefore any result won't be recorded on your health records. Other types of HIV testing can be put on your health record. You need to speak with the HIV test provider and ask whether or not the test result (whether positive or negative) will be included on your file.
I always advocate ANONYMOUS testing if at all possible.

You can go to your local Planned Parenthood, Health Department, or your doctor's office and ask to be tested. Results can't be released to anyone without your written permission.

Go to a GUM Clinic. They give you a Clinic number (which you use to get the results too) plus you can select not giving info to the doctor. It is completely secret (unless you’ve HIV and I think they have to refer you for treatment).
It is a blood test so drinks plenty of water for 2 days before so your blood runs faster. I don't and the nurse ticked me off for that.

If you’ve the test with your GP it will go on your medical records. If you have the test at your local GUM clinic, it will not go on your medical records. Your Dr doesn't have to know and if you wish, everything can remain anonymous.
