Hi - long story short my gp is adamant i have ME - a different gp at same practice thinks its narcolepsy and has referred me to a consultant who says “maybe” and wants me to do an overnight sleep study, now i'm wondering if that could be wrong and if it could be something else.
My symptoms - always tired. total blackouts and blackouts where i'm still conscious but cant do anything. (narcolepsy symptoms)
I also have bouts of physical weakness where i cant stand or do much. I'm a little worried about the fact that my hands are going weak-shakes when i hold a pen to write, cant grip very hard for very long etc
i also have a grinding pain in my lower back when i walk any distance. i leave the house absolutely ablebodied then i finish up hobbling and limping like an old lady. taking baby steps
When i feel weak i also slur my speech (people have actually asked me if im drunk) but it passes when the weakness does.
does anyone else have these symptoms and what diagnosis did they receive?
Answer:
I'd recommend you go to a different practice and get another view. While your first “gp” thought might be correct, there are many conditions that include narcolepsy symptoms among many others, and you do seem to have many other symptoms. Then again, participating in the sleep study could rule out narcolepsy. An opinion from another practice could advise you best.
Answer:
Your conscious blackouts sound like cataplexy rather than narcolepsy. I would personally be requesting an MRI or CAT to rule out MS rather than ME - especially the slurred speech and pain in the lower back. I really wish you the best of luck. These symptoms aren't pleasant. 27 is about the right age for MS. Sorry if I made things worse. Good luck.

I think you’re probably over-weight and grossly unfit. The net affect is that your heart is not working efficiently and you’re therefore always exhausted and struggling and your skeleton is starting to struggle to hold you-up because you have poor muscle tone. The cure is straight forward - get as fit as you were in your prime. Be honest with yourself and do something about it
Answer:
GO TO A DOCTOR ASAP… it sounds like you’re having signs of muscle weakness all over your body. go to a doctor instead of doing the sleep study. the pain in your back is NOT normal. it could be a variety of things such as nervous system infection. either way GO ASAP.
Answer:
You do need to follow up and have the sleep study done. Some of your symptoms don’t fit with narcolepsy, but if you do have it and it is appropriately treated, it might positively affect the others.
