I've grown 2 inches over the last 2-3 years. My doctors surgery measures me each now and again. I should have been 5' 3″ when I first registered 2 years ago but was 5' 4″ but put that down to a new doctors and just a slight variation in the position of the ruler on the wall. Last week though I was 5' 5″ and thought it was a mistake but just checked it at home and it's correct.
At my age surely I should be losing height.
Answer:
Perfectly correct you can't increase in height from aged 18. This is because the epiphyses of your long bones, the growth plates, fuse at this time which makes further changes in both length totally impossible.
Even excess doses of growth hormone, either artificially given or released 'naturally' by a pituitary tumour will not result in bone extension. Instead it produces acromegally where the bones thicken, and become weakened.
Sorry Frank ( nice name BTW) but the diurnal variation in height, tallest on wakening, shortest, due to the downward pressure of weight on the discs between the vertebrae of the spine is an average of 0.7 cms and a maximum of 1 cm.
Answer:
Dr Frank is usually in the Women's Health and Diet and Fitness section. You might want to try posting this question there. I wish I could answer your question, though and can't wait to see his answer! I do wish he would stray over here for a while, and answer some q's though.. We do have Tweety here and she is really good too!
Good luck!
p.s. I was wondering about posture, but most people do make sure they’re their full height when getting measured….
Edit:
Hey Dr. Frank! Glad you came by today! Thanks for the reply! can you swing by more often? : - ) and what’s up with you thumbs down people, can you not see where he’s “TC” d? And posture IS probably the reason. Sorry peeps, but I am an “all things gut related” expert. This WAS a job for Dr. Frank! lol!
Peace!
Answer:
A lot of your height issues, has to do with your posture. Keeping your back straight, and your shoulders back increases your height. Although if you sit about humped over in the shoulders and back, then your back bone begins to curb, taking away from your height. So obviously, you’ve learned to sit with excellent posture. : )
Answer:
Have you lost weight? When i put on weight i was at least an inch shorter than when i was thinner! I also grew a shoe size when i put on weight. Also, my friend used to have a curved spine in a S shape. She visited an osteopath and over a period of about 18 months she gained 3 inches in height. Posture definitely affects your height!
Answer:
Variation occurs according to the time of the day the measurements are taken. We are all taller first thing in the morning (after laying prone for several hours) and by being up and about all day you find that you measure less in the evening.
Answer:
Dr Frank is correct, growing after age 18 (20 for males) is impossible. Has your posture changed recently? Perhaps you were standing up straighter- this will make a difference.
Answer:
The only things that stunt growth in our lifestyles can all be directed to just common sense if you have a lousy nutrition everyday, if you lack the proper/essential/beneficial foods to eat daily, it won't necessarily stop you from growing, but it doesn't exactly increase the chances, either. Also, lack of flexibility has shown to hinder more growth, as the muscle tissues around your growing bones may or may not be the most potentially stretched. Just in general, nothing really stunts growth, but simple things such as getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep (hormones levels are released during sleeptime, producing growth; also, to rebuild muscle and give energy), staying physically fit (cardio, aerobic/anaerobic variations), and simply staying active thoroughout the day is all a pathway to growth. There are ebooks sold on the web that claim to teach you the secrets of growing taller they are scams no ebook can make you grow taller and if you really want to grow taller even after puberty then check this out www.super-growth.com or http://www.howtogrowtallernaturally.com I heard about it on a health forum strangely enough. I tried it not expecting much since l am 27….and I have been using it for 3 Months and I actually purchased it for my legs ,l see a 2 inches difference in my legs already. it has worked really well for me. Some companys are now making already blended versions, it works though there isn't much for scientific evidence supporting the manufacturer's claim, but it works, also my friend tried it and it really worked out well for her too.
