My son will be 3 this month and yesterday after he kept complaining it hurt to wee i took him to doctors with a sample and she stated there is protein and blood in there. He has antibiotics for 7 days then have to take another sample in. Doctor mentioned him being referred to peads. Is this normal and therefor should i be worried something serious is wrong?

Answer:
Normal. Any uti in an under 5 is referred…thats because it can sometimes be a symptom of reflux…not reflux as in babies who spit up milk…but kidneys that dint function well…my niece has it…but she’s fine…she just gets more utis than your average kid…its not expected to affect her life in any way badly…my daughter got a uti at 3 and was refferred and nothing at all is wrong with her…they scanned her kidneys to check. EDIT….oh..my neice who has reflux got LOADS of UTI's before she was even 1….it normally shows up early.

Answer:
Don't worry about your tiny one being referred to a paediatrician, it's probably a better safe than sorry referral.

My son was still wetting the bed at the age of 5 and had a recurring uti, was referred to the paediatric department of the hospital as they have more experience of small childrens problems. He is now fine.

There is probably nothing serious wrong but the experts need to track down exactly what sort of infection is causing your sons problems. If there’s anything serious then he’ll be in the ideal hands.

Hope all goes well.

Answer:
You are lucky to have such a good doctor!

Nothing for you to worry about.

Better safe than sorry.

If the next sample is clear it means whichever antibiotic he was given has done the trick and he may not be referred to a paediatrician in that case.
