Heya, I suffer with asthma and I'm having trouble breathing at the moment. I can't have any more 'puffs' of my inhaler because I've had too many, but it's not working anyway. I've also noticed my heart is beating really fast. I've been like this for about 2 or 3 hours now and it's not going or easing. Anyone got any recommendations of what I can do please? Many thanks, Soph xx

Answer:
There are some pretty perilous bits of advice in the answers given to your relatively straightforward question. The worst from andromada21 and old know all.

If you have trouble breathing with your asthma and your reliever (Ventolin or Bricanyl) isn’t rapidly solving the problem you need to seek medical advice quickly. You may require nebuliser therapy, oxygen and steroids.

Your fast heart rate will be due to high dosing with your beta2 agonist, NOT anxiety. Rebreathing air from a bag will compromise your pO2 which might already be reduced, risking further hypoxia and increasing your risk of serious oxygen lack. This could have VERY serious consequences!

Answer:
If you still have bronchospasm despite taking your inhalers then seek important medical attention. What on earth are you doing on here in the middle of an asthma attack?

EDIT
Do NOT listen to the poster who is telling you to use a brown paper bag, this is potentially hazardous in this situation. You’re not having an panic attack, you are having an Asthma attack- your heart rate has increased due to your Ventolin inhaler. Air can’t get in because your airways are constricted. You need to seek medical attention. You'll be given the nebulizer at hospital and other further
management if needed.

Answer:
Get a massive paper bag (it must be paper, don't try this with a plastic bag - a massive envelope will do).
Take a deep breath, put the paper bag over your nose and mouth and breathe out slowly into it. Now breathe in slowly with the paper bag still in place (Don't worry, you won't suffocate) and then breathe out again.
Breathe in and out three times with the bag over your nose and mouth, then take it off and flatten the bag as you breathe in normally. Now do the whole thing again. After a few minutes, you'll breathe more easily and your heart rate will slow.

Answer:
when oxygen supply is affected due to asthma heart has to work more.you can swallow 2 tablets of deriphylline and betnesol and go to a hospital in case you need admission after inhalations if there’s no change seek medical aid at hospital only. don’t make condition worse and land in hospital. it is serious then. please do not neglect

Answer:
Speak to the NHS direct, but my friend suffered the same many years ago and she was advised to breathe in and out of a brown paper bag - as she needed more carbon dioxide in her system

Answer:
your heart rate is fast because of using too much of your inhaler. I would recommend you go to the ER and get a nebulizer treatment if you can't breathe.

Answer:
go to the a&e dept of your nearest hospital, you poor thing, im fellow asthmatic too, please go its not to be messed with…

Good luck
