i'm having an mri scan on saturday to look at a suspected injury to my anterior cruciate ligament. if it does show that i have a tear, i am wondering is surgery essential? i don't want lots of time out of sport but i want to be able to play at the same level as before. i know that you can play football without this ligament as Raul (real madrid striker) is missing his anterior cruciate ligament in both knees.

i would like to be back in 3 months but if i have surgery that’ll not be possible. do you think it would be possible if i selected not to have surgery?or is that just wishful thinking?

Answer:
Matt, take advice from your physician and don't rush back into sport until you are fit to do so. If you do rush back, you may sustain an even worse injury and then be off for even more months.

It's not worth it x

Hi btw ;-)

Answer:
I had a ACL about 4 years ago, with NHS rehab it was 6 months before I was able to play again, but the knee has never been the same since, it just feels weak, and I have never been able to regain the confidence I had before the injury.

It felt better with the strengthening exercises, so I would advocate that you keep doing them on your own after your return.

An operation would probably be better and your recovery would be quicker, but they are specialised operations and the NHS simply doesn't have the resources to treat you the way a professional footballer would be treated

Answer:
Depends on how serious the injury is. I know lots of sporty types end up having an Op. but I had a problem after a 250+ mile bike ride and just needed a course of massage and physio which lasted about 2 months.
