I twitch when I'm falling asleep. It's once I've already sort of fallen, so I don't really register I'm doing it, but my partner does. Sometimes I do a super-twitch, it's like all my muscles do one massive spasm and I wake myself up. Does anyone know why this happens?
Answer:
Its called a myclonic twitch, the autonomic nervous system is trying to keep you alert to waking up , it developed from ancient times when people needed to sleep less soundly due to potential attack and threats, absolutely natural.
Answer:
Oh, I hate that, I get it sometimes when I'd half dreaming of walking up stairs and I step up but there's no more steps so I fall. I think it's because we're so focused on what we're dreaming of that when something happens we jump, as we would in real life, and because we're so relaxed it feels more violent… I'm just making this up but it makes sense to me…
I've also woken up before, reached for my alarm clock, not been able to grab it, then realised my arm hasn't moved and is hanging at my side, which was really creepy.
Answer:
It happens to me a lot to, except instead of twitching, I hit people.
I'll swing my arm or leg and hit the person I'm sleeping next to.
I don't know how to control it but I'm guessing it's something that just happens.
You can try to control it, but I don't know if that’s possible when you’re sleeping
Answer:
It relates to what's happening to your dreams. Like if you fall in a dream. With me I usually fall into a black hole before I go to sleep and my whole body jerks from hitting the “ground” and I wake up immediately! Or when you trip and fall in a dream..
Actually one time at was at a sleep over and the sisters shared one bed and I was with another friend..and one of the sisters had a dream she was playing soccer and kicked her other sister thinking she was the soccer ball. lol! good times..
Anyways you get it..right?
Answer:
sometimes it's your dream
but i learned the real reason. I just wish I could remember it…
It's something about one of the nervous systems in your body that wants you to stay awake, so it does twitches and contracts certain muscles.
sorry I wish I had the exact reason. good luck.
Answer:
I do that all the time when I'm just dropping off to sleep. I think it has something to do with not being in a deep enough sleep. I get this sensation that I’m falling or about to fall, then I abruptly sit up in bed as if I am just about to breathe my last.
Answer:
lol yeh … the worst thing is I've noticed I do it more if I'm in bed with my partner … it's never been mentioned but I'm sure it must be annoying :p I've noticed it coincides with thoughts about physically moving as your mind goes to sleep thinking about the day or whatever
Answer:
I read somewhere that its because your body is relaxed and its kinda the same sensation as when your falling and the twitch is your body preparing for the impact. Not sure if that's correct but I read that somewhere.
Answer:
I've got no idea why it happens but it happens to me a lot just as I'm about to drop off to sleep, sometimes it feels like I'm falling backwards or other times it feels like my whole body jerks, it's freaky!!
