Is the gel applied to just the catheter or applied straight to the ureter? (uk - bedfordshire)

Answer:
The Ureter is the tube connecting the Kidney to the Bladder so this isn't involved. The Urethra is the tube taking urine out of the body or "the Water Pipe"

Usually to the catheter, but many Dr's i work with also apply it the area around the urethra as it numbs it. Applying it to the Urethra won't cause any harm as it will be going into the Urethra anyway from the catheter! (we use single use syringes of sterile lignocaine gel)

I always apply it to both as it makes it a little easier. As long as the catheter is inserted using an aseptic technique, risk of infection is minimal

I don't know as much as the RNs, but I've done It before.

Answer:
In the female it is generally applied to the catheter alone. In the male it is squirted in to the urethra via a nozzle attached to the tube.
