A lot of times I'll just pile it on until I feel it achieves the level that I'd like. I use a lot a lot of mascara, too, so usually I'll use about 3 coats and then use the mascara brush in a vertical position going from individual lash to lash to emphasize.

I use at least two, but usually more. I’ve very thin, short eyelashes though, so I need all that mascara just to make them visible. The amount you use depends on both the look you're going for and what your natural lashes are like.
