I think I need professional help/counselling or at least some professional advice as I have some form of depression it may even be BPD (but not in a severe form). If I was to be diagnosed with a mental illness how would this affect me and employment?

would I’ve to tell my employer? or future employers?
are mployers granted to not/less apt to hire me if I have been diagnosed with something?

is it illegal to keep this information private from others if I am diagnosed or receiving treatment?

Answer:
Depending on what job you take.

You don't have to tell an employer, BUT if you are in a public service job such as a police officer you will have no choice but to let them know, if you are even lucky to get that job.

If you preform any type of public safety jobs, such as truck driving, you’ve to tell them.

People will tell you that you don't have to tell an employer and its not their right to know, but say laws are different and some times the mental say of an employee has to be 110% 24/7 without taking meds.

I don't know why everyone says that it is illegal for an employer to know the mental say of its employee, but I work for TN. Department of Corrections, as a correctional officer, and you HAVE to sign a disclosure and you have to do phsyc exams.
If you have a mental illness you are not permitted to work with corrections, as an officer.

Answer:
Hi, it is illegal to not hire a person with a mental illness, it is against the law. Also sometime it is superior to tell an employee, you usually get hired faster, this is because they don’t want to seem like they discriminated and face a law suit. Also if you’ve Bi-polar you might have times when you’re so down you cannot work so tell them up front, I have never seen it hurt a person only help them to tell

Answer:
You have totally no obligation to advise an employer about something like this.

Believe me when I say I have worked and continue to work with people with all manner of issues, from bulimia, alcoholism, and big depression and it hasn't even affected their capability to do their job.

If there is one thing you can afford not to be concerned about it's this.

Good luck anyway and for what tiny it's worth, why not take this piece of advice given to me by a very clever man recently: “When my staff tell me they’re stressed out or depressed I just tell them not to be. It's just a job”.

Answer:
I have a diagnosed mental health condition and have had for many years, and take regular medication

It does not have to be disclosed

The only time my employer found out was when I had a change of meds, which worked against me, and had to take time off work

I work full time and my condition is managed.

Answer:
If you’re diagnosed with a mental illness and it is well controlled there is no reason for you to tell an employer. You do not need to disclose it, and if you’re stable then you have the same chance as getting employed as anyone else.

Answer:

Answer:
