I'm 49 and have never had to wear glasses. I have the ability to see okay, although small writing it is not as clear as it used to be. I take a bi yearly eye test and have just had one. The result was as follows:
Right eye: Sph +0.25 cyl -0.25 axis 180
Left eye: Sph +0.50 cyl -0.50 axis 180
The optician said I really did need glasses and wasn’t even borderline.
However, I just looked at my last test in 2007 and it was virtually the same and that time they said I didn’t need glasses.
Also, the optician handed me over to a salesperson as I tried to leave the shop, and it looked for a while that my only hope of escape might well be to purchase a pair! Which made me a bit suspicious…
Can anyone out there advise me please?
Answer:
if you're 49 and your near-vision reading is blurry, i bet thats not all of your Rx. do you’ve a portion on your Rx that says “add”? that would be the reading portion, which is what most 49 year olds with blurry near vision need
Answer:
Both my husband & myself (50's) noticed a deterioration when reading.
He was advised to buy glasses at optician, however we decided to try the cheap reading glasses sold in pound shop.
Have been using them for several years now and we both find them perfectly sufficient.
You can get bi-focals and sunglasses for reading also at £1. Maybe they won't suit everybody but you could give them a try before you spend hundreds at the opticians.
Answer:
DUH!
the answer's simple.
if the optician said you need glasses, then you need glasses.
easy.
you should really get some.
also, if you were told to wear them all the time, after like, 3months or something, you can get contacts.:)
so just go back to the shop and get some for yourself.

If i was you, i'd pay for another test. If you don't want to do that just ring a different optician and ask to talk to someone for advice. My guess is that you are slightly long sighted and like the other person advised, the pound shops do sell reading glasses that you could try.
Answer:
You don’t have to purchase your glasses from the optician where you were tested. You’re not entitled to free sight tests yet but even so resist the high pressure sales pitch. There are places where you can get lenses changed for a pittance compared to the High Street stores. Try Specs for Less at Bolton, Lancs. They’re on the net.
Answer:
That depends on you. You said you can see okay, so don't get glasses unless it worsens. It's too early to need them if it's just small print that you can't see.
Answer:
pretty much
Answer:

Answer:
you should buy contact lenses. They’re very good.
Answer:
You’ve Presbyopia.
Young eyes can adjust focus e.g. from infinity to 24″. Aged eyes lost their ability to adjust focus, so the focus is stuck, e.g. at 10 feet. Then anything in the distance is blurry and the newspaper can never come into focus no matter how hard you strain.
When you were young, you only need one prescription to set your focus at the infinity and your eyes can focus closer as needed. When you age, like after age 40, the eyes cannot change focus, so you would need one pair of glasses to see far and one pair to read. Since your prescription is pretty low, you can survive without a far prescription. You should buy a pair of reading glasses, they’ll get rid of that headache when you read.
Your spherical and cylindrical prescription balance off, so you’re not near sighted or far sighted. You just have minor astigmatism. And of course, now add Presbyopia to it.
