I am 16 weeks pregnant and have to go under consultant led care in the UK, because I have Multiple Sclerosis, previous miscarriage and fertility treatment..
I’ve my first appointment tomorrow and I was wondering what happens, and why is consultant care different to midwife care.
The reason I ask is that a friend states they’re apt to scan me more during the pregnancy, and I wouldnt want to drag the hubby along for boring stuff like how much weight I have gained, but would hate for him to miss a scan….
Can anyone help?

Answer:
At your first consultant appointment he/she will ask for a history of your MS eg when you were diagnosed, the symptoms you suffer, how frequent your relapses are, any medication you take and which neurologist you see. They’ll write to your MS consultant as a multidisciplinary care team will offer you the best support. Due to increased risk of relapse post natally they might suggest additional medication post natally to try to avoid a relapse as well as enquiring about support you’ve.
They wont do any additional scans until 28+weeks (and usually then for growth if yuo are on medication for your MS). Tomorrow you’ll be given a rough outline of when the consultant will see you through out the rest of the pregnancy.

Hey, I'm under consultant led care in the UK because of multiple miscarriages.
I have been booked in for more scans than most people, one at 12 weeks, one at 20, one at 28, one at 32 and one at 36 weeks.
At my 16 week appointment I met my physician at the hospital, got to listen to the babies heartbeat and had a blood test…that was about it though really.
I think the only real difference between consultant and midwife led care is that Drs are superior trained if anything goes wrong than midwives.
Good luck and congratulations to you!
