First antenatal visit?

Author: admin

Only just today found out i am pregnant. I'm 4w5d's and have booked an appointment via my Dr's surgery to see the midwife on the 29th Feb. Just wondering what will happen then, will i have a blood test? Have an ultrasound etc? Will i be given folic acid etc? will i be internally examined etc? I haven't got a clue??? Thanks for your help :)

Answer:
If you are in the UK - this is what happened at my first midwife appointment

Urine, Bloods, blood pressure, listen to fetal heartbeat and gave me a wealth of information equivalent to what I received on the first day at Uni for my social work masters!!

She also aksed me lots of questions about my previous medical history (and family history), any issues with previous pregnancies, miscarriages, terminations. Dicussed whether domestic violence was an issue for me (they ask ALL women this in order to offer support/ monitor risk to unborn child)

previous psychiatric history (and within the family) to guage risks of post natal depression.

Discussed options for care - hospital led or shared care between midwife and GP

Options for birth - if you have any ideas already - e.g I knew I wanted a waterbirth etc.

Folic acid you should already be taking, midwives do not supply this (in the UK)

Ultrasound is a separate appointment, or at least it was for me (in the UK)

I had my first scan at 12 weeks and my first midwife appointment at 13 weeks.

Answer:
At my first prenatal visit, they weighed me, took my blood pressure, did a transvaginal ultrasound, and drew blood.

Answer:
They will probably due an internal exam, do a urine pregnancy test to confirm, may due an ultrasound but may not (up to the doctor). They will also draw blood to do numerous tests. You will probably also be given a prescription for pre-natal vitamins. Will you be given folic acid?? No. You should be eating that on your own (orange juice is a good source).

Congrats.

Answer:
on my first visit i was given a pregnancy pee test, examined vaginally, i also took blood tests, had a vaginal ultrasound. I guess it depends on where you go to see your doctor. Good luck and be extra careful during the first 12 weeks.

Answer:
They may take blood, they wont do ultra sound, they take personal details, may check ur weight ask about smokin/drinking/

…u have to get ur own folice acid…its all quite basic at 1st..the more u go the more they do and congrats

Answer:
Yes most likely all of that.

Answer:
you will get a blood test and then the next appt will be the internal exam…. and so forth.

Answer:
On your first visit they fill out paperwork and give to you to keep for duration of pregnancy, talk to you about what you can eat and can't, talk about your due date, weigh you, blood pressure, book you in for scan and for bloods to be done and make appoitment for your next visit. It all very exciting, good luck mum to 2 and 36 weeks pregnant.

Answer:
Normally when they do the first apt. you don't see the doctor. The tell you how much everything will cost. At 11 to 12 weeks they do a pap smear and physical exam. Then they listen to the babies heart beat. That is what happened at my doctors office. Not sure if all are the same.

Answer:
on your first visit you will get a load of booklets and ifo. and your maternity notes. you may get a blood test. your first ultrasound they will do at about 10-12 weeks. you will just have to give information about your familys health background, things like cancer etc and also your partners aswell but dont worry if you dont know about your partner. i didnt. hope this helps and congratulations i am 32 weeks pregnant and a mother of a 2 year old already. it is the best thing you can ask for

Answer:
You will need a pelvic examination and a trans vaginal ultrasound, but if you haven't had any of these proceedures then how do you know how far along you are?

Answer:
The midwife will do blood tests, urine tests, take your blood pressure and find out about your general health. She should also give you information on how to take care of yourself during pregnancy regarding what not to eat etc. You should really be taking folic acid now, ideally before conception but you can buy prenatal vitamins everywhere.

Answer:
Just wanted to say congrats!

Answer:
Firstly congratulations.

You need to take a urine sample with you, first urine of that day which she will test for sugars etc, she will take blood and will explain what thats for - the doctor should have given you a urine pot but you can pick one up from the reception area if you haven't seen a doctor.

She will go through lots of paper work with you and talk about further blood tests you will be offered.

You should be given a pack with all different booklets to read through, some is just junk but some are interesting. She will also send off for an appointment to be made for your first scan which will be around your 12th week mark - you have to be patient and it is def. worth it.

I very much doubt she will give you folic acid but you can pick this up from any chemist and you take that up until your 12th week. Your best to just go get that now cause the sooner you start taking it the better.

I wasn't internally examined but it doesn't mean to say you won't be, I am told it can vary from place to place.

I opted to have all the blood tests done and have been totally honest about everything which is for the best I believe and would suggest to anyone to do the same.

Good luck.

Answer:
They will check your blood pressure, test your blood for rubella, HIV ect. They proberly wont check the heartbeat cus its way too early for that. They ask loads of questions aswell.

Answer:
I didn't have my first prenatal visit until 8 weeks with either of my children. They may or may not do an ultrasound, since they may not be able to see much. I had to go to ER at 4 weeks with my first, they saw a sac, but no baby, and scared me half to death. You will get a urine test at every appt until you have the baby. They will probably set you up for some blood tests, for STD's, Urine tests that are most sensitive than the one the Dr. gives in the office. You should have started your pre-natal vitamins when you found out you were pregnant. They'll ask you if you're taking them, and can suggest some if you need them to. You will probably do a pap smear too. I have "What to expect when you're expecting", a lot of people suggest that book, but my favorite was "The Pregnancy Bible", it didn't answer questions like the other, it organized your pregnancy by weeks and milestones, it also had amazing pictures.

Answer:
im not sure where you are from but i know internal examination are done in america but not in england, so im not to sure on that 1. i had my blood taken at 16 weeks so they did all the test spinabiff and downs…sorry bout spelling. i wasnt ever given folic acid, but if your not given it go buy some its good for you both. they wont normaly give you your 1st ultrasound until your at least 12 weeks. You will just be asked a few health questions about both you and your partner. relax your fun has now begun!!
