one of my close friends is extremely pale and after coming back off holiday this year she is super super brown - which cant be healthy.

i was surprised as being very fair she normally severely burns herself on holiday rather than going brown, but she confessed this year she had been going on sunbeds before she went away and it continuing to do so.

im worried because although ive expressed my concern to her she doesnt seem bothered and i dont want her to damage her skin or health.

what can i say or do to encourage her to stick to fake tan

i feel shes only started using sunbeds because everyone at my college (girls) seem to be competing to get the best tan. i cant see the appeal myself i dont even use fake tan

i know all the dangers of sunbeds but if i explain them to her i think she reckons im speaking nonsense. should i just leave her to it ?

Answer:
I wish I could help you. I'm a victim of sunbeds myself and at only 27 I've had two cancerous moles removed and I’ve a lot of premature skin damage. Sometimes we do have to learn the hard way and nagging her will probably just make her do it even more. The thing is when you’re young you think you’re invincible and nothing can injured you…nothing could be further from the truth.

Answer:
find a picture of someone who has over done the sunbeds and now looks like an old leather boot… shat should do it! seriously though, there is no such thing as a healthy tan, tanned skin is damaged skin and thats a fact. And she’ll end up leathery and really risks skin cancer of all kinds eventually. Anything in excess can be hazardous! As you can guess, I like to stay pale and youthful! :-)

Answer:
If she is pale, it's illegal for her to get sunbed tanning.

That's right, those who need it, it's illegal.

If she is Skin type 1 [blonde or red hair, freckles, usually gets very burned, pale eyes..] it's illegal, she should not have been granted.

If you have expressed your concern, that's all you can do.

let her get skin cancer.

omg haha watch it, it seems a bit pedofile at the start, but its not- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fuH_26nW…

Answer:
tell her its nearly winter..summers over so everyone will know shes faker!! i=and whens it's over done you can encounter abit tacky looking not like a nice tan/complexion.

why don't you advocate getting a spray tan theres not as many risks..if she don't listen let her get on with she eventually stop one day

Answer:
I don't think sunbeds are that bad.

I think it is very useful if you’ve fair skin and you go to holiday for a very sunny location, and prevent you from sunburn.

Answer:
No keep telling her the dangers. Buy her a bottle of fake tan..Fake bake is good and there are some other nice ones out there that actually make you brown. Try it yourself and show her.

Answer:
dont keep on nagging her about it, she will just get pissed off.

she’s doing it to make herself feel superior. youve expressed your thoughts and thats all you can do.

Answer:
tell her to but on suntan lotion and walk around outside so she can get a naturally healthy tan and join her for support.. because you look a tiny pale yourself

Answer:
Sounds like your jealous otherwise why would you be so concerned? Its her life, let her do with it whatever she wants.

Answer:
Despite the publicity against the use of tanning beds, I’ve used them in the past to help with skin problems.

I’ve very fair skin and since a young child have suffered many problems in the sun, even though still using high factor sun creams. I suffered from severe 'prickly heat', which is very uncomfortable and often painful. When on family holidays I would spend the time fully dressed and in the shade! Thus, I have never been particularly bothered by tanning.

HOWEVER, a few years ago I met a lady who had suffered with severe reactions in the sun and had similar experiences. She told me how she had used sunbeds to overcome these problems.

I then used sunbeds during the winter periods, but never more than once a week and I use the sunbeds to help, not to tan. I’ve since had no problems in the sun. I still wear high factor sun cream (although not as high as spf 50 that I used to wear).

It is a personal choice and as long as someone has all the facts it is their own decision to make. Sunbeds, as with most things have drawbacks and come with government health warnings. Everything in Moderation.

Answer:
That’s a difficult situation. I refuse to tan or even go out in the sun for any period of time without sunscreen as I know 2 people with skin cancer caused by sun exposure and one of them is dying.

Tell her that not only can sun tanning cause cancer, it also ages you incredibly fast. My friend is a sun worshipper, and has been for years. I have never tanned. We are the same age. She looks 10 years older, while I look 10 years younger and get carded to purchase cold medicine (we are both 33).

If all else fails, show her this picture of a sun bather. This is what will most likely happen to her if she continues: http://gurugilbert.com/wp-content/OldTan…
