16 nearly 17 and I have been wanting/looking for a tattoo for over a year now
I don't want anything that i will regret when I'm older
I love the idea of a swallow on my wrist but my mum thinks it is a silly place to have it.
Open to any suggestions
I'm not after a name or anything
not too huge
That can maybe be hidden under clothes???
Something oldschool possibly
and any1 whos got a tattoo how long did your design take ??
Answer:
I've got 2 that are very well hidden. 1 on my right upper thigh just below my hip bone and one on my left hip bone. Nobody can see them unless i'm wearing a bathing suit. Don't get something that can be easily seen, do you really want people to see your tattoo while you're in a wedding dress on the day you get married? Mine mean something to me and those are stories I have the ability to tell with pride if anyone ever happens to ask and believe me, people do. Be sure you have a great story surrounding what/why/where/when the tattoo came to be.

Might want to listen to your mum on this one. The wrist may not be the best place to get your first tat. If you are concerned that you will regret ti in a few years time it's probably a sign it's not something you really want. Do a little research into what the meaning of what swallow tattoos meant to the sailors who used to have them.
You're still young take your time with it. Don't let anyone else tell you what tattoos to get, you will regret that.
My designs have taken some time for me to devolop the image in my mind of what I wanted then finding similar photos with aspects I wanted in my tattoos. After that you get the hard part of getting that idea through to the artist who then has to draw them and keep making adjustments until you are happy.

Wait until you’re older to get a tattoo. I know that sounds cliche and I’m not trying to lecture. But honestly I’ve nothing against tattoos I actually love them. I’ve one myself and want one more. I’m 26 and I waited until I was 23 to get mine. I know it doesn't seem enjoy it now but those few years make a massive difference in regards to getting something you’re not going to regret. Let yourself grow as a person before you jump into it because it IS permanent. I don't want you to regret your decision. I don't regret mine at all, I love it!
I have 4 stars on my lower back. I actually got one (the the main one, it's bigger than the rest) separately. That only took about 7 minutes! I went back to add the 3 stars on top and that took about 10 minutes. It wasn't bad at all but it was definitely uncomfortable. It felt like I was being scratched pretty hard and it was warm to hot. Basically, a warm scratch! LOL

honest recommendation……if you don't want to regret it later, don't get it before you're about 20
either way, if you select to listen to that advice or not, I honestly think that once you decide (on your own) what to get, you should sit on the idea for a year
if, at that time, you still love it and think you'll love it for the rest of your life…..get it
the problems I see with you (in my opinion)
are that you're too young
and that you’ve to ask strangers on the web for ideas
……those are serious issues when it comes to whether or not you'll regret it

I got my first tattoo in july it took me 7 years to decide what I wanted and where to get it. I got a awesome star design on my hip. It hurt like hell!!! I am getting one on my shoulder with my son's zodiac and mine with a star holding them together.
Answer:
Get it in a place so that you can cover it with clothing if you need to. I have a tattoo on each shoulder and have never regretted either one.

I agree with MB. I know it isn’t what you want to hear. I am not trying to speak you out of getting tattooed eventually (I am 26 and am heavily tattooed) but the only tattoo I regret is the first one I got when I was 18. It was something I thought I would never regret (it had to do with my religious beliefs at the time and I’m an atheist now) and I’m planning on getting it covered with a half-sleeve this winter. It was so dumb. I don't want to sound condescending but you are at an age when a lot of the things you believe and a lot of the things you love will change and while the ideas you have now might seem fabulous and extraordinary and timeless you may hate them 5 years down the road.
Don't be afraid to take a couple of years to consider what you really want. After all, you’ll be able to care about a tattoo for the rest of your life, what’s the harm in waiting a tiny while?
I do think getting stuff that is old-school or old-school inspired usually looks pretty great but that is just me. I really like modern images tweaked to look old school, those are quite fun.
Good luck, hon!
edited to add: OH if you just want thought on wrist tattoos I can help you there! I’ve little birdies tattooed on the insides of my wrists and people usually have to work with me for a couple of months before they notice them. I wear chunky watches on my right hand and since I am right handed that’s usually the arm people see (when I am shaking their hands or handing them something). They are not as noticeable as you might think. I would advise that you get them a little “higher” on the wrist so that they can be covered by long sleeve shirts if you completely need to.

To be honest with you, I would wait a little longer 'til you are older. I wanted a tat since your age but I didn't take the plunge until I was 27 so I was very very sure (and I did change my mind about the design!). Good thing about being older is that I could afford a very good tattoo shop - you will be looking at £50-£100 on a swallow depending on how large you get it and the artistry involved. My first isn't big but it needed to be right (lots of colour etc) and I went to one of the ideal tat shops in London (Into You) - it took almost 3 hours.
if you want a tat on your wrist, remember it can effect job prospects etc as visable tats always can. Also (and your tattoo shop should advise you this) depending on how detailed you want it, it may need to be a certain size i.e. bigger than you planned so it doesn't end up looking like a blurry mess.
I would get a design that means something to you rather than a flash design (the ones they’ve on books and the walls), and get something pretty one-of-a-kind so you don't look like everyone else (i.e. get a star like most people seem to have). I have very original tattoos which I am very, very proud of!
Aldo do some research on the tat shops - i.e. get recommendations, go in at look at the cleaniness, talk to the staff - they should be very happy to discuss your ideas with you, give you advice and maybe even design something for you.
My first tat was on the small of my back which is mainly hidden so I would advise somewhere there or hip, back of neck if you hair covers it etc. I also have a foot tattoo (took an hour) and a wrist tattoo (tiny and simple, 10 mins). Thinking about maybe getting another! It's addictive!)
Good luck whatever you decide but remember to not make any rash decisions, if it's a mistake it will be there forever.
Pain wise I don't think they hurt, not even right across the top of my foot (secretly love being tattooed!) but if you have a low pain threshold or are scared of needles I wouldn't advocate it.
